Collection: Agate

Agate is banded chalcedony, a very fine-grained form of quartz. It usually forms inside gas pockets in old volcanic rock, where silica-rich water seeps in and builds up layer by layer, which is where the bands come from.

Varieties and Trade Names

Most agate names describe the pattern. Moss agate has green, moss-like inclusions in clear or white chalcedony, and Tree agate is similar, with branching green markings. Crazy Lace agate has tight, swirling lace-like bands in cream, red and brown. Blue Lace agate is pale blue with fine white banding. Botswana agate has soft bands in greys, pinks and peach, and Red Botswana is a warmer version. Sakura agate, also sold as Cherry Blossom or Flower agate, comes from Madagascar and has pink and white flower-like patterns. It was only found around 2018. Dream agate is a looser trade name used for several different patterned agates.

Bright solid colours such as purple, green, blue, pink and black are usually dyed, which is a long-standing practice in the agate trade. Other names you may come across include Fire agate, which has an iridescent rainbow sheen, and Laguna and Lake Superior agate, named after where they are found.
