Collection: Carnelian

Carnelian is a translucent orange to red variety of chalcedony, coloured by iron oxide. Most commercial carnelian comes from India, with Brazil and Uruguay also producing it.

Varieties and Trade Names

Heating to deepen the colour is standard practice and has been done since ancient times, so you should assume most carnelian on the market has been heated. Darker brownish red chalcedony is called sard, and when it is banded with white it is known as sardonyx.

PureTrade Gems supplies wholesale carnelian to UK shops, market traders and other trade buyers.
