Collection: Moonstone

Moonstone is a feldspar made of thin, alternating layers of two minerals, orthoclase and albite. Light scattering between these layers creates its soft, glowing sheen, called adularescence.

Varieties and Trade Names

It occurs in white, grey, peach and other colours, and Sri Lanka and India are traditional sources. Rainbow moonstone, with its blue and multicoloured flashes, is technically a variety of labradorite. Black moonstone is a dark orthoclase feldspar. Larvikite is sometimes sold as Norwegian moonstone, and a man-made glass is sometimes sold as opal moonstone, which is really opalite.

PureTrade Gems supplies wholesale moonstone to UK shops, market traders and other trade buyers.
